About the Author
Né en 1923, Gilbert Delahaye fait ses études à Tournai et entre, en 1944, chez Casterman comme ouvrier typographe. Connu par ailleurs pour ses écrits poétiques (il obtiendra le prix Prévert en 1985), il se voit confier par la maison d'édition la mission de donner vie à une fillette, dont les aventures pourraient être déclinées en une série d'albums. C'est ainsi qu'en 1953 naît le personnage de Martine, avec la complicité du dessinateur Marcel Marlier. Martine à la ferme et Martine en voyage paraissent en 1954. Jusqu'à sa mort, en 1997, Gilbert Delahaye écrira chaque année une nouvelle aventure pour son héroïne.
Marcel Marlier naît le 18 novembre 1930, à Herseaux, commune de la Picardie belge, à proximité de la frontière française. À seize ans, il s'inscrit au cours d'arts décoratifs à l'école Saint-Luc de Tournai. En juillet 1951, il termine ses études avec la plus grande distinction. Il retournera à Saint-Luc comme professeur dès 1953. Encore étudiant, Marcel Marlier est primé pour son talent de dessinateur lors d'un concours de dessin organisé par les éditions de La Procure à Namur. Celles-ci l'engagent dans la foulée pour illustrer des ouvrages destinés aux écoliers, tel le Livre unique du français. Deux ouvrages pédagogiques passent entre ses mains, qui vont marquer toute une génération d'élèves par la fraîcheur du dessin : Je lis avec Michel et Nicole et Je calcule avec Michel et Nicole. La collaboration avec La Procure durera plus de vingt-cinq ans. Mais dès 1951, Pierre Servais, un des responsables du département édition chez Casterman, est séduit par l'aisance du trait de Marcel Marlier, et il lui propose d'illustrer des livres destinés à la jeunesse. Il va ainsi illustrer des livres écrits par Alexandre Dumas (Les croisières aventureuses du capitaine Pamphile, 1951), la comtesse de Ségur (Le petit de Crac, 1953; Un jour de bonheur, 1960) ou Madame le Prince de Beaumont (La belle et la bête, 1973). Il va également participer à la collection Farandole, destinée aux enfants. En 1954 débute sa collaboration avec Gilbert Delahaye pour les aventures de Martine, sa série phare (60 albums publiés à ce jour, 100 millions d'exemplaires vendus dans le monde !). En 1969, toujours chez Casterman, il crée la série Jean-Lou et Sophie : douze titres au total, dont il est à la fois l'auteur et l'illustrateur. Marcel Marlier s'est éteint le 18 janvier 2011, à l'âge de 80 ans.
